Psychic Power
with Joan Slingerland

Psychic powers -- Do they exist? About half the group participating in the discussion said Yes and half said No. The ways people had experienced psychic power were personal experience and with psychics using tarot cards, psychic readings and palm readings. About half the group had been to visit a psychic and half not. A few treated psychic advice seriously and most said that it was interesting and entertaining. All information received from psychics had been positive or encouraging except for two people who experienced their readings as depressing.

From where do psychics gain their power? The non-believers argued that trickery and the power of suggestion was all there was to it. The believers generally thought it was a gift that all people had, but most do not develop. A few people, however, are born with the gift strongly developed. The gift, it was argued, is heightened sensitivity of all or some of the senses. Some argued that psychic power comes from one or more additional latent senses.

For the third round, six people left the room (one from each small group). Those remaining choose some object in the room. The people rejoined their group where everyone was mentally concentrating on the object their group had chosen. We went around the room to see if any of the six could guess correctly what had been selected. No one guessed the correct object; however, one person said that the chosen object was red (which it was); another said that it was a sign (which it was); and another, who chose the clock on the wall, (and one of their group members said they were thinking about the clock even though their group hadn't chosen it).

In the final round for the evening everyone in the room tried to see if they could see auras around our leader Joan and around some other participants. Each person stood in front of a white wall, with the lights dimmed and we followed the instruction from the book Psychic Power by Korra Deaver. Many people could see the colored energy fields around the participants and the colors seen were interpreted as explained in the book.

We ended the evening with a vote on how many people had changed their beliefs about psychic power. EVERYONE ended the evening where they had begun!

PS: we had two tarot card readers and one palm reader in attendance.

I do believe in brain waves and being able to run computers or artificial limbs with your Brain waves if we can link the mind to a sensor chip implanted in or around the brain. But that is a little different from Psychic powers.

Yes I do believe most definitely in psychic abilities. My mom has premonitions. She has had them since all of us kids were little. It is, or used to be, most bizarre as a child, but now I find it very interesting. I have also had premonitions, and my older Sis as well. It just happens. This thought comes into your head, and the feelings surrounding it are so strong, you cannot seem to let it go. Next thing you know...what you had been thinking really happens. I just think that some people are more tuned in to their psychic abilities than others, and they may not even realize it. Who knows why? I think it is more of a sense of things, and once you get this sense inside it's difficult to shake it. It's hard for some people to understand this as most people don't want to believe in something they cannot see or touch. I've always known there was something to it all. It's fascinating really!

Two nights before my Dad died in '91, I dreamed I was talking to my Aunt and her daughter. They kept saying, "Go to Your Daddy". I wrote it off as a late supper nightmare.

I do believe in psychic ability and know that I have it. That Psychic Ability that is called ESP (Extra Sensory Perception) or our sixth sense. When I know that something bad is going to happen to myself or someone that I am close too I will get restless. Ever visited a place and know that you have been there before but yet that is the first time you have entered or seen the place. Some people's ESP is more accurate than others. Those of us that feel something are more than likely to do things on a "gut " feeling, or do something that we can't explain why we've done it in the first place.

I don't know if I have the power or not. But I do have instincts or inclinations. I'm sure that you've all heard the expression "woman's instincts". Well, that just what I have. Nothing else.

The best one I can relate is my feeling for radar on the highway. Almost everyone who has driven with me will slow down when I tell them too. I feel sort of a warm feeling in my chest, like I am actually feeling the radar physically. I can also detect ghosts, which do exist, by the way. I have seen ghosts, smelled ghosts, and experienced their little ghost games of throwing things and such. Not to be feared, though; most ghosts just want to be recognized for their existence.

I have had an interest in psychic phenomena since I was at least 14. I do believe pretty much everyone has this to some degree whether they call it intuition or anything else. Many mothers experience this with their children as I have. I once dreamt my son was hit by a car and I couldn't shake the dream but people kept saying to me it's only a dream. About a month after is when it did happen to him and he got a broken leg. Years later I dreamt of seeing him in this building that had many beds and he was a small child again in the dream. Every time I tried to cover him with the blanket he would kick it off. Shortly after that dream he broke his back and they didn't know if he would walk again. While in the hospital and noticing all the beds, I thought back to the dream and that's when I honestly felt reassured deep inside that he would walk again as I thought back to him kicking those blankets off in the dream. Also on the day of the accident, it was the very first time I had ever gone to where they rode their dirt bikes. I just pulled into the parking lot when it happened and thank God I did. It really is a hard thing to put your finger on but I know within myself that there is something there and that what many put off as coincidence is probably something more. In my early 20's something else happened that really shook me. I use to hangout at this hotel and there was a guy that I sometimes danced with. One night I dreamt he died. The next day reading the paper, on the front page was his picture. He was killed in a car accident. That's when I actually said a prayer asking God to please take this power from me for I didn't want to know about thing's that were to come. I couldn't handle it. Honestly I believe that prayer was heard because it stopped happening to me and really didn't start up again until later and mostly with just my kids. I don't know why or how these things happen, I only know that they do. I don't expect anyone to believe it unless they've personally experienced this kind of happening for themselves.

E-Question: Do You Believe You Have Psychic Powers?

I do. I think we all do. But I've never tried to develop the skills, nor do most others. I've had experiences where I 'saw' what was happening somewhere else, or what was going to happen, and it was true. Strange, but not scary. It doesn't happen often, but I don't do anything to encourage it. Now, if only I could see what the lottery numbers would be!!!
If we define "psychic ability" as something supernatural, no one has it. If we define it as a normal brain function that bypasses the usual step-by-step logical thought process, then everyone has it.

Yes, I do have physic abilities, and they have been manifested in many unusual ways. I come from an Irish background, and inherited the tendencies from my Mother, who also had the abilities, and now one of my daughters, also has the gifts. Since I am a Christian, and do not want to delve into the occult, I have been cautious in using or coveting any more of them. There have been things I have known, about a stranger, upon meeting them for the first time, almost like reading what is in their mind. And I have found objects, which have been lost for a very long time, and knew exactly where they were. And on a few occasions, I have found missing people, certain of where they are. I also think of a person, and they write to me, or call me, even if we have been separated for a long time. And I have had many "deja vu" experiences.

Do I have psychic ability? Absolutely not. Catastrophic events have been sensed ESP style by only two family members I know of. My daughter, then four years old, with no prior knowledge described my wife's car wreck (that killed her) in words my wife would have used the day after the wreck. I asked her what did you just say? She had no idea. The time of the wreck, my brother living in Virginia suddenly looked north and knew something happened. He has also managed to move out of the way of lightning strikes (yes, more than once) at the last second Other than near misses with lightning and catastrophic loss of life there is no psychic ability in the family.

Psychic abilities? In the pure sense of the word, no, but I believe we can be effected by subtle body language cues and eye contact ... and that some of us are better than others at reading and interpreting those subtle clues.

Yes I actually do and its really scares me. I know when something bad is going to happen, not all the time, but some time. When my grandmother died I knew 2 nights before how it was going to go. I knew I was going to get a call from my mother that they were taking her to the hospital and she would die shortly after that. That's exactly what happened. It's like a little voice inside of me tells me what's going to happen. I have had this experience in a couple of other situations. I also listened to it once and wouldn't let one of my kids attend a party and that really freaked them out cause I told them what would happen and it did. Have had others too I know when I go on a job interview before I leave whether I have that job or not. I also have a feeling in June when my son graduates from high school that he will get some kind of award. I'll let you know if that happens. I could go on and on about it but it is a scary feeling and really bothers me.

I sure don't have any Psychic abilities...and I don't really know if I want to have any. I think we all have premonitions at times...there are times I just feel that something isn't right and sometimes I am right, and there are times that I work myself up worrying and it is for nothing.

I believe I've had premonitions but nothing other than that. I told my ex husband about a dream that I had about him being with a younger woman and she had long blonde hair and glasses and that we were arguing. He thought it was quite funny. Turned out that I was right because I caught them in the garage. I had never seen the girl before. It was the girl he was having the affair with. Talk about a very weird feeling.

Why is it that folks can have 50,000 dreams and/or premonitions and/or "feelings" that don't come true but that one in a million that does come true or at least close means they are psychic? Is that statistically significant?

My mother has psychic abilities. I have not always listened to her when she has one of her "feelings," but 99% of the time she is right on the money. Unfortunately, she is unable to control it, and is therefore not able to use it to any advantage.

When bowling, I see the "strike" red light get bright before I release the bowling ball from my hand.

I would not say that I have psychic powers but I have a lot of ESP. I can feel some kind of event before it happens. I get that gut feeling and usually I'm right on. Like when we meet someone I will study that person while talking and I can tell if that person would be a good friend or not. It's so odd to me that I can get that feeling.
